October 2009

It’s absolutely true, in life we settle.

Seth Godin mentioned it on his blog “We settle for something not quite right, or an outfit that isn’t our best look, or a job that doesn’t quite maximize our talents. We settle for relationships that don’t give us joy, or a website that’s, “good enough.” I don’t know about you but the last thing I would want is to live a life of mediocrity. As children most of us are encouraged to be amazing, to strive for our dreams and to do what’s in our hearts.  I remember listening to the stories about Superman and Wonder Woman, watching Care Bears and reading my ultimate favourite kid’s book Jillian Jiggs about good friends, good intentions and an unstoppable stream of creativity: the infectiously upbeat tale of disarray, distraction and blissful disobedience that makes us glad we choose adventure.

What is it about these tales that motivates us? It is the fact that these characters chose to be different. Following the herd is a sure way to mediocrity. You need to be different if you want to be above average. And in order to be different you have to have a dream, you have to think BIG. Without a dream/passion it could cause you to slide into mediocrity on autopilot.

Are you doing what you want or what you should? Are you trying to meet other people’s expectations? Are you choosing what’s safe rather than what is right?

In work, in love, even in your wardrobe – dare to be different, raise the bar. Instead of having 10 dresses in your closet that you like, why not have 5 that you love! That makes you feel amazing, that you radiate with confidence when you’re in them. Avoid mediocrity like you would the plague. Because everything is a choice. Ultimately the choice you make distinguishes Wonder Woman from Paris Hilton.

Maybe every Tom, Dick and Harry goes to Holt Renfrew to be outfitted in the best attire. Does that mean you should do the same? No. Figure out what’s at your core, what your represent, what kind of Superhero you are and play accordingly. Maybe you got your pants from Holt Renfrew but you got your jewelry at the One-of-a-Kind Show from a local artisan, your shoes from a vintage shop and you made your top from a pile of others. Is that radically different or what? Pave your own path, one that is different, bold and unique.

Mimi and You Necklaces

I spoke with Mitra recently to find out more about the style maven herself. I asked what are your secrets to authentic style?

Mitra: My most important secret is to Infuse my personality and creativity in what I wear, other secrets to style is investing in the timeless classic pieces and punching it up each season with what’s hot. Timeless pieces inspired by the masters (Coco Chanel, Dior, Calvin Klein) , classic accessories: like pearls, statement necklaces (it changes any outfit), the timeless black handbag.

Don’t fall for trends but compliment your wardrobe and show your personality  and creativity with a few of each season’s must haves, and if you want to stay ahead of the trend, watch what is going on the streets (street fashion is one of the indicators to runway fashion).

What are some of your newest obsessions?

Mitra:

  • Companies giving back to the community ( Social Entrepreneurs), I’m making a conscious decision to buy goods or services from companies who give back to the community through volunteering, charitable work and social sustainability and who are local.
  • Statement Necklaces (it changes any old outfit to new)
  • Hot Chocolate with espresso
  • Fuchsia

Speaking of doing good, Mimi & You founded “Celebrate Courage” where they celebrate the courage of women who walk away from violence. Mimi & You is inspired by the women at women’s shelters and want to support their journey and celebrate their courage.

Forever21 is a great shop for accessories and basics like tanks, tees and cotton long sleeved tops. My most recent favourite find is the brushed metal filigree cuff – a steal at $6.90 CAD. Perfect to pair with a casual look of a white t-shirt, jeans and a colourful scarf or an elegant look with a little black dress. It is a jewelry staple that you will get a lot of use out of.

Laura Kim Connell, writer and mother of two was feeling stuck in her current style. In an effort to welcome the new chapter of her life she approached me to help provide some style guidance. Laura’s goal is to start up an eco-friendly boutique in the near future and wanted to be outfitted in a look that would help embrace that new journey.  Laura wanted a wardrobe that would reflect the fun times ahead, rather than the structured and safe style she has until now embodied.

Laura and I went through the entire Signature Style process together looking for the clues that would emulate what was at her core. After a series of exercises it was clear that Laura loved colour – despite all the black in her wardrobe and that elegance, femininity, flow and movement were an important part of the change. Identifying her shape and colours were the important first steps in providing initial direction. Keeping in mind that being environmentally friendly was important and that Laura’s biggest style challenge was accessorizing it was her passion for vintage that played an integral role in changing her look by pairing them with the unexpected.

Ultimately, putting Laura in well fitted clothes that she loved and felt amazing in, then polishing it off with her unique vintage finds made her new look beautifully and truly her. Checkout Laura’s work at  http://forthoseabouttoshop.onsugar.com/

Christian LouboutinI honestly and proudly admit that I am addicted to shoes. I have a closet full them and each pair brings me a special kind of happiness. They are sexy as hell and when I wear them I know I am beaming with confidence because I feel fabulous. But it is the Christian Louboutin trademark glossy red soles I crave and have not yet inherited.

Quote 7 - Fashioned by What We Love

The meditation ring is based on the ancient Tibetan Prayer Wheels. The Prayer Wheel plays a very important role in Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The practice of turning the Prayer Wheel, or even wearing or having in one’s home, is said to be of immeasurable benefit for oneself and others. Buddhist teachers and the ancient texts explain the profound benefits of the Prayer Wheel for its power to quickly harmonize the environment, enhance compassion, encourage a peaceful state of mind, and assist practitioners on their journeys to enlightenment.
