S: Why do you think Style is important?

K: Style is a way to express your personality and creativity. It shapes the first impression that people have when they meet you. Everybody can shop and buy clothes from the same store but it’s the accents that people add to this clothing that help show their style and personality.

S: What are your secrets to Authentic Style?

K: It’s weird, every season I have ideas in my head of the perfect shoe, jean or sweater that I would like to buy and wear. Sometimes this is influenced by fashion magazines or sometimes by social events that I have to attend. However, I always seem to find myself shopping for the item that I can never find. When I do eventually find it, there is no other feeling like it. Sometimes, I will find that item a year later in the next season and I think, “wow, this is what I wanted last year.” I have learned to trust my fashion instincts even if they are not what everybody is wearing at the time. Fashion designers must get their ideas from their heads as well!

S: What are the items in your life that you absolutely couldn’t live without?

K: Items that I could not live without would be a good pair of jeans. A pair of jeans can be paired with any t-shirt, tank or sweater. They can be dressed up or down for any occasion. I have learned to spend more time when shopping for jeans and that the brand or price tag does not necessarily matter. It’s the fit that makes them perfect!

S: What are your newest obsessions?

K: My newest obsession is Stella and Dot. I have always loved jewellery and made it part of my outfit but since becoming involved with Stella and Dot the way I dress has transformed. I used to look for patterned and colourful tops that would make a statement. Since wearing Stella and Dot jewellery, I have learned that the jewels are the statement. I could wear the same jeans and t-shirt 5 different ways by changing my jewels. It has made wondering what to wear in the morning a lot less frustrating.

S: What is your favourite piece of Stella & Dot jewelry?

K: My favourite piece of Stella and Dot jewellery is the Gold Adrienne Mixed Chain Necklace and Fringe Hoop Earrings. I love the warm gold tones of chain and how they complement my skin tone. This necklace can be worn multiple ways and at different lengths. It really fits my lifestyle and wardrobe.

S: Do you have any exciting news you’d like to share with us? Or can you share what your inspired to do next?

K: Fall is approaching and I have purged my closet to make room for new items that I may purchase this fall/winter season. This season, I am inspired to continue to keep my clothing simple and make statements by accenting with my new fall/winter Stella and Dot jewels. I am on the hunt for a perfect pair of boots and shoes with a heel that are comfortable and I can wear everyday, even when chasing my kids.

I’m just loving this line of jewelry, it’s feminine, fun and fabulous. I adore the simplicity of the designs and the part I love best is that each necklace has a name and story. Checkout the Octavia Bloom Etsy shop for the entire line of beautiful jewels.

The necklace featured here: { O l i v e n e } the lady of carefree summer days and fresh squeezed lemonade loves nothing more than her Lace Necklace. She’ll tell you every chance she gets it’s the way the charm rests so easily upon her chest and sways gracefully from side to side with her as she dances hand and paw around the yard with her old pal Bacon, the little brown beagle dog.

Faithful Tip: Pair one of these divine necklaces with a causal outifit for example a basic white tee, blazer and jeans. It will had some sparkle and colour creating interest and depth.

Baby On Board Apparel is a Canadian Made maternity fashion company. Their mission is to create fashionable basics that fit, flatter and feel as great as your favorite t-shirt. The brand was conceived when founder Ali McEwen’s sister was pregnant with her first child. After seeing that the maternity market lacked apparel that celebrated pregnancy, Ali soon sent on her mission to create something that mommies to be would be proud to wear. BOBA is by far the best maternity clothing I’ve come across because her pieces are extremely versitle and can be personalized to fit your unique style. I had the pleasure of asking Ali a few style questions.

S: Why do you think Style is important?

A: I think style is important because it is an expression of who you are. Style doesn’t mean that you are wearing the top brands and the “it” items. I don’t own any luxury brand items because that isn’t who I am. I still think that they are stunning, but I would rather go on a great vacation and wear Joe Fresh then splurge on a Gucci handbag. This is the great thing about the direction that style/fashion is going in; it’s becoming more about personal preference than looking like a particular celebrity.

S: What are your secrets to Authentic Style?

A: I love to mix the old with the new. My Grandma has passed down some amazing jewelry to me. She had amazing style and most of all fabulous jewelry. I love the Grandma Chic look. My favorite look to rock right now is a fitted t-shirt, a broach and a pretty skirt. Just like the clothes I design I love pairing basics with everything. Nothing feels better on than something made in jersey.

S: What are the items in your life that you absolutely couldn’t live without?

A: My Blackberry although I have a love hate relationship with it. My camera and all the photo’s I have taken. I love taking pictures but even more so I love looking at them over and over again. My favorite new models – my niece and nephew!

S: What are your newest obsessions?

A: Using Olive oil for everything and I am not talking about cooking. A while ago I was watching Dr. Oz and the segment was about using olive oil for beauty treatments. Now I use olive oil instead of shaving cream which is amazing and also as a moisturizing facemask along with some white sugar to exfoliate my skin.

S: Do you have any exciting news you’d like to share with us? Or can you share what your inspired to do next?

A: This summer has been amazing. I have loads of exciting things going on. On August 9th I went to Haiti for 6 days with the Colline Foundation to work at a summer camp in an orphanage, then on August 28 I will be attending the Boom Boom Room Emmy gifting suite in Los Angeles with Baby On Board Apparel and then in October I will attend my first business to business tradeshow in Las Vegas. I am also working on a new website which is going to be fabulous and so innovative.

Ali is such a giving spirit and her line of fashionable basics for blossoming bellies gives expecting mamas beautiful clothes that are comfortable, practical and stylish. I encourage you to browse the line and learn more about this amazing designer especially if you have a small one on the way!

Style is meant to be a fun process, in which you can take it upon yourself to do just about anything. Not sure what your style is exactly? Or maybe your lifestyle has changed and you’re not the Chic Urbanite you once were. The best way to forge a path to your new Signature Style is the process of discovery. Opting into in a few fun activities to get your creative juices flowing will do just the trick.

Go on a sensory shopping experience and become a connoisseur for your unique beauty. Here are some of my favourite style hunting activities.

1. Visit a museum; notice what catches your eye. Maybe that translates into a new colour palette.

2. Go to your local fabric store, play with pattern. Maybe you pick up a unique fabric for a one-of-a-kind dress.

3. Attempt a DIY project, get crafty. Maybe that turns out to be your signature element.

4. Venture into a vintage boutique, discover a story. Maybe that opens up the door to a new passion.

What do you adore? What do you love? Let your interests lead to your style. Have faith in the process. You may not find an entire outfit that communicates your style. But you will find something that makes your heart sing, your eyes see fireworks and your soul do a happy dance. Take that as a Style Sign. Maybe you come across a beautiful vintage rhinestone brooch that you can’t take your eyes off of…ask yourself what about it do you love so much? It is the fact that it has a story? Does it have clean lines? Does it sparkle? Come up with 3 adjectives that represent it. Take those words and look for the same qualities in a blouse or skirt. Once you’ve found a selection of items that communicate those core adjectives, the second step is making sure there is some contradiction/conflict. A little drama always sparks the curiosity of others. If there is flow add some structure, if the outfit is predominantly black add a punch of colour. Step three is putting the effort into the details. Your fragrance, jewelry, accessories, makeup and hair all unify your look making it more interesting.

Take a deeper look, explore the meanings and venture outside the box to create something unique. Translate that into a wearable outfit that emulates your essence and is an authentic representation of your soul.

The scarf is by far one of my favourite go-to accessories. It adds a punch of colour, an unexpected pattern and instantly creates depth and interest in an outfit. It is an inexpensive way to update your wardrobe and is easily the best way to integrate your personality into your wardrobe. Paired with grey capris, a white tee and denim jacket any of the scarves below transform the look into something causally chic. Or added to a pair of trousers and blazer makes you look more polished and put together. The possibilities are endless and the hunt for the perfect one can be super fun!

Tips For Selecting the Perfect Scarf:

1. Buy the best quality that you can afford.

2. Avoid the chain stores and venture into stores/boutiques that offer a smaller selection of styles to ensure you will not be the hundredth person sporting the same item.  (For example Winners, Vintage Shops or online)

3. Pick a pattern that is in harmony with your facial features and does not over power you.

4. Select a colour you adore and brings a smile to your face.

5. Choose a texture that feels great against your skin.

Faithful Style Tip: If you’re in the Toronto area, visit the Exhibition Place during the annual CNE festivities. The cultural vendors from around the world carry a great selection of goods (including unique scarves) in a variety of colours and fabrics and at a great deal. You’ll be sure to find a few great pieces to add to your wardrobe.  All these beautiful scarves are available on www.piperlime.com

Imagine you had only one dress in your closet that worked for everything – work, date night, parties, or the occasional wedding. Well I’m here to share with you my secret style weapon. The Two Birds Bridesmaid dress, one dress that can be worn over 15 ways for every occasion and transforms to match your every mood.

This incredible dress was designed by Ariane Goldman from New York City and was created to marry a bride’s vision with her bridesmaids’ happiness. It is one dress, two sizes (size A 0-14, size B 16-24), comes in 18 colours, requires no alterations and can be worn more than a dozen ways.  You’ll never have to go looking for an occasional dress again. The beauty of this dress is that contours the body, draping beautifully and flattering all. This dress is approximately $300 CAD (for the shorter length) and when you do the math that is $20 a dress (since you can wear it a million ways)!!! Where in the world are you going to score a deal like that?

Dress it down for the summer with flip flops and a patterned scarf or dress it up with a killer pair of heels and jewels. Add a blazer to make it work appropriate or incorporate your own stylization with a cluster of vintage rhinestone brooches. The possibilities are endless and I guarantee you the dress will stand the test of time, lowering the cost per wear over decades.

I had my eye on this dress two years before I got married, my bridesmaids purchased it and so did I and none of us have been disappointed. Here are just a few ways to play with it. The best part is you can be the designer and be the creative soul behind your look.

Visit www.twobirdsbridesmaid.com to view the different dresses; classic (which is the one I have and love!), go through the colour options like Kelly Green, Peacock and Coral and to watch the video tutorials to help you style it perfectly.

This was a speech made by Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Anna Quindlen at the graduation ceremony of an American university where she was awarded an Honorary PhD.

“I’m a novelist. My work is human nature. Real life is all I know. Don’t ever confuse the two, your life and your work. You will walk out of here this afternoon with only one thing that no one else has. There will be hundreds of people out there with your same degree: there will be thousands of people doing what you want to do for a living. But you will be the only person alive who has sole custody of your life. Your particular life. Your entire life. Not just your life at a desk or your life on a bus or in a car or at the computer. Not just the life of your mind, but the life of your heart. Not just your bank accounts but also your soul.

People don’t talk about the soul very much anymore. It’s so much easier to write a resume than to craft a spirit. But a resume is cold comfort on a winter’s night, or when you’re sad, or broke, or lonely, or when you’ve received your test results and they’re not so good.

Here is my resume: I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let my work stand in the way of being a good parent. I no longer consider myself the centre of the universe. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends and them to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today, because I would be a cardboard cut out. But I call them on the phone and I meet them for lunch. I would be rotten, at best mediocre, at my job if those other things were not true.

You cannot be really first rate at your work if your work is all you are. So here’s what I wanted to tell you today: Get a life. A real life, not a manic pursuit of the next promotion, the bigger pay cheque, the larger house. Do you think you’d care so very much about those things if you blew an aneurysm one afternoon or found a lump in your breast?

Get a life in which you notice the smell of salt water pushing itself on a breeze at the seaside, a life in which you stop and watch how a red-tailed hawk circles over the water, or the way a baby scowls with concentration when she tries to pick up a sweet with her thumb and first finger.

Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure, it is work. Pick up the phone. Send an email. Write a letter. Get a life in which you are generous. And realize that life is the best thing ever, and that you have no business taking it for granted. Care so deeply about its goodness that you want to spread it around. Take money you would have spent on beer and give it to charity. Work in a soup kitchen. Be a big brother or sister. All of you want to do well. But if you do not do good too, then doing well will never be enough.

It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, and our minutes. It is so easy to take for granted the colour of our kids’ eyes, the way the melody in a symphony rises and falls and disappears and rises again. It is so easy to exist instead of to live. I learned to live many years ago. I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned that it is not a dress rehearsal, and that today is the only guarantee you get. I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and utterly. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned. By telling them this: Consider the lilies of the field. Look at the fuzz on a baby’s ear. Read in the back yard with the sun on your face. Learn to be happy. And think of life as a terminal illness, because if you do, you will live it with joy and passion as it ought to be lived”.
