Spiritual

Most people define spirituality in terms of religion, others ignore the subject all together and then there are a select few (like myself) that revere spirituality as the authentic journey in discovering one’s self.

The process of identifying one’s values, understanding likes, loves and passions, happily letting go of dislikes, unfulfilling obligations and societal responsibilities.

Since 2007 I started on a personal journey both consciously and unconsciously. In 2011 I will be turning 30 and lately I’ve noticed I’ve been experiencing some internal conflict. My intentions and messages to the universe do not always align. I do not want to wake up one morning when I’m 54 and say what the hell.

Noticing and trying to map together the interconnectedness of all the things in my life I’m serious about making a BIG change. The type of change that moves mountains, think Eat Pray Love meets The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari. I sometimes say things with the best of intentions but end up with unfulfilled vows and a bucket full of excuses and I’m genuinely tired of traveling the same circle. Am I alone?

I’m craving…

1. A deeper journey of inward reflection.

2. Connecting with the right people.

3. Taking more worthwhile trips.

4. Getting clearer…ensuring my intentions align with my message.

5. Making a couple of steps everyday (forward or backwards as long as it leads to some kind of learning)

6. Making a genuine difference, touching a soul.

7. Basking in true beauty

And when I say beauty, my definition of beauty may be slightly different than the one you’re thinking of. I perceive beauty to be multidimensional. It is everywhere, in the act of unconditional kindness, in the shape of clouds, in the memory of an encounter many years before, in the smiling face of a loved one, the magic of dance, in the colours of a painting, in an elegantly worn outfit, in the smell of a flower, in the experience of walking barefoot in grass or sand, in a dream…

And when I made a post about my vision for The Real Beauty Journey, it was my intention to capture this beauty that exists around us. But I’m starting to realize my journey is deeper than that.

What kind of journey are you on?

I decided last minute that I want to participate in a great event next month called One Love Toronto and help raise money for a very deserving cause. With less than a month to build my donations I have a goal to raise $250.

On Sat Dec 4th I am doing 108 sun salutations led by 12 inspiring yoga teachers to help raise money for South African humanitarian efforts focusing on children and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. We are supporting a halfway house, a community center a bakery and an orphanage.  By supporting me you are changing the lives of children in South Africa.

Every little bit helps, if you’d like to donate (no obligation) I’m collecting money (cash or cheque made out to The Engage Network) or you can donate online with three simple steps.

Thank you in advance for your support, it is much appreciated.

With the ascent of patriarchal ideas and ways of life leading to our current society, women and men have lost the connection to the Earth and the cycles of the moon. Before this began, the moon was used as a benchmark of time and as a guide to when the crops should be harvested. The moon was considered feminine as it contributed to the growth and reproduction that sustains all life on the Earth. This recognition led many to associate the Moon with Goddess energy, overseeing the Earth as the bringer of all life.

The moon is dark and mysterious and only shows its face when sunlight is reflected upon it. Darkness is the place where all things begin. Within the womb, the egg, and the Earth, darkness exists as the starting places of creation. Unfortunately our current age has created negative images of the dark associating it with witches, demons, and other negative thoughts. Night is also no longer night as we disguise it with artificial lights that reach deep into space. No wonder our Divine Feminine is lacking in our current state. Our Earth is crying to be heard. There is an urge now in these shifting times to resurface the recognition of the moon and offer attention to the Dark Goddess within all of us and to our connection to the Earth.

Even though the moon is much smaller than the Sun, it is much closer to us and is a vital factor in the Earths ability to support life. Most people are aware that the moon is the reason for the tides of the oceans we experience daily but unaware of the other elements it affects. Like the symbol of the five pointed star, the moon affects the four elements, Earth, Water, Fire and Air plus the divine spirit of creation, Us. It affects the Water through the pull on the ocean’s tides; the fire of the Earths molten core causing it to surge and recede; the changes in height of the body of air, the atmosphere that surrounds our planet, which contributes to the shifting weather patterns; and finally the movement of the Earths crust toward the moon. As children of this Earth and bodily comprised of almost all water, we too are affected emotionally, physically and spiritually by the power of the moon. We experience more injuries and emotions during full moons and less at New Moons. In karmic thought it is believed to be a great time to release karma during Full moons and manifest desires and goals during new moons because of the gravitation pull heightened when the moon is full. Females share the Goddess likeness in having the ability to create within our own wombs, and experience the lunar cycle through menses, our menstruation.

I didn’t realize until recently how few women realized how our bodies and emotions were connected and governed by the moon. What an awesome notion! We women are influenced by this huge celestial body and thus share with the Earth as Great Earth Mother who also heeds these cycles. Therefore if we left this Earth we would not experience a 28‐day cycle. We have an awesome power within our womb, physically and emotionally, that many are unaware of because in this day and age this cycle has been hidden, caused embarrassment, viewed as inconvenient and manipulated with regulating drugs so that it would appear to not exist. During menstruation instead of honoring and resting our bodies and our daily routine, we blame our actions on our cycle of PMS and go about our life as normal all while there is blood leaking out of us! Without speaking of the endless causes of why this has happened I prefer to offer this text to speak of the privilege we have as women to have to this ability to bleed. We have a womb! A womb that can create, cultivate and sustain life for 9 or so months. We have a menstrual cycle, blessed by the cycle of the moon Goddess, every 28 days.

In ancient times, women took their moon time to rest, meditate, release the unwanted and honour their bodies, while celebrating womanhood. The men respected this time as an honouring of the female creative force. Women and Men both understood the importance of allotting this time of sacred space for women, as they were the carriers of future generations. Since we experience blood flow as a result of no impregnation, symbolically, the blood was an offering back into Mother Earth to be recycled and renewed for the next coming cycle. Because there were no outside influences, like electrical lighting, contraceptive pills, or processed unhealthy hormone filled food, the menstruation cycles of
women within a tribe would correspond together with the dark side of the moon.

There is urgency now for women to join together and reclaim our Femininity, our gathering together in acknowledgement of our creative force within our wombs. The Earth is indeed feminine and acknowledging Her through Her female offspring is desired. We have the ability to aid in healing the Feminine energy lacking currently on this Earth plane. We can do so by honouring our bodies with rest, good food and allow the time of the month to come with ease and respect. WE can do so by joining with other women in community and circles for support, encouragement and advice as we march along this once forgotten path.

The power is within our wombs to manifest a new reality for females. It is not about getting those jobs that men have or fitting in to be equal where they sit. Instead we can carve new positions, a new Goddess seat for women and create unity, power and shared communication amongst all women that invokes and honours our Goddess likeness to Create, and Birth our dreams, our children, our futures and the future and health of the Great Earth Mother. I challenge with love every woman to look within the power of their belly and creative life force and spark joy, pride and gratitude for their unique ability to be in the cycle of the moon having an impact on this Earth.

The following poem is dedicated to the Great Earth Mother.
Circle in Her Name
I am that
That which births
Eternally,
Everything Whole.
I am creation
Mothering womb of time
Listen Clearly
I am coming
She will invoke I
Knowing truth returning to
Rights awakening being It
Rituals breathing of me
I will be born again.
So wake me from my slumber
Goddess circle of divine feminine
I am here
Ready to share and be honoured
U, circle of seeded women
The moon calls your tides
and invokes your cycles.
Return to my side and be in your gentle power.
I am the lady
Earth mother
Terra named
In me surrender
To your wholeness
And your divine perfection.
I am that
…….So hum…….
That which is everything,
That which springs from my womb.

Faith, whether it be in ourselves, God, Goddess, Buddha, Mohammad, or the powers of the Universe, is a potent and beautiful thing. It enables hope. It invites desire. It softens and strengthens and sings. As a feminist I want to be able to embrace and embolden every aspect of my life and my world. I want to be able to believe deeply and speak definitively. I want to be able to hope fervently and work my ass off for change”

I loved Danielle LaPorte’s post yesterday burning questions with ronna detrick: faith + feminism. It’s a great read, check out the full article.

It was the magnificent images and the strange desire to experience the “abode of snow” in Nepal that made the Himalayas part of my top 5 desired travel destinations. Many travelers go to Nepal for meditation, yoga, astrology, retreats and to merge with the mighty Himalayas. The mighty altitude of the Himalayas is said to be a constant remembrance to the loftiness of the human soul. That is why all sages and prophets have found the Himalayas best for their spiritual pursuits. The Himalayas are home to some of the most enchanting landscapes in the world.

Places to See

Bhaktapur
Bhaktapur , 14 km east of Kathmandu is a completely medieval world and a must in your itinerary. With its well-preserved temples and monuments , the peasants and artisans, the town will take you in its spell. The whole town has almost no concrete buildings, life is buildings are traditional and peaceful. This well preserved city  is the home of medieval art & architecture and still retains its rich medieval aroma. A city of farmers, Bhaktapur is also known for its pottery and weaving. Bhaktapur is the most charming and the best preserved of the valleys three cities. The intricately carved temples, alleyways and timeless atmosphere of this place is simply intriguing. The major sightseeing places in Bhaktapur are The Durbar square , the Golden Gate, Palace of 55 windows, Bell of the barking dogs,  5 storied Nyatapole Temple, Bhairavanath Temple, Dattatrya Temple, Pujari Math etc Bhaktapur can be done along with a hike to Changunarayan temple or  a visit to Nagarkot.

Swoyambhunath Stupa
About 45 min of walk from city centre ,atop a green hillock west of Kathmandu stands the great stupa of Swayambhunath, a site over 2,500 years old marking the point where the legendary patriarch Manjushri discovered the lotus of the ancient Valley lake. For centuries an important center of Buddhist learning, the painted eyes of the Buddha gaze out from all four sides of the monument. Constructed to specific rules each with a symbolic meaning, the stupa of Swayambhunath is a model of its kind. The whole is hung with multi-colored prayer flags whose every flutter releases holy prayers. The faithful circumambulate the stupa clockwise, turning the banks of prayer wheels and even prostrating full-length in reverence.

Swoyambhunath commands great view of Kathmandu valley and the Himalayas and a visit around sunset time is said to be highly memorable.

The Himalayas is also the home to many Holy Men, commonly know in Hinduism as sadhu which refers to a mystic, an ascetic, practitioner of yoga (yogi) and/or wandering monks. The sadhu is solely dedicated to achieving the fourth and final Hindu goal of life, moksha (liberation), through meditation and contemplation of Brahman.

I would love to be in the company of the sadhu merely to experience their lifestyle. Have you ever experienced a lifestyle extremely different from your own? What did you learn? How did it impact you?

My spirituality is central to who I am.  I am Hip Hop loving, Gen-X working mother who can still rock a party (when  I can get a babysitter).  I wear several hats: mother, partner and entrepreneur but underneath them all is me, the woman. My spirituality helps me to uncover who I am and what I need to continue forward on my life’s journey. I know that as I have grown as a person my relationships have become more honest and more loving.  My spirituality has also helped me to strip away the relationships that no longer served my highest good. Those were the ones that fed my fears and insecurities. When I’m pissed or disappointed, my spiritual beliefs help me to gain perspective. I remember that we are all souls traveling on this earth, being imperfectly human.  When I feel small, afraid or woefully inadequate, my spirituality helps me to remember my own divinity.  I am connected to an unseen, powerful force, that I can tap into for strength and for courage.

Spirituality is an individual pursuit. However you define it, find some daily practice or regular source of inspiration that provides you with comfort and a kick in the pants when you’re procrastinating or whining.  I’ve found a wonder passage about spirituality.

Through my years of exploring, I’ve come to realize that like most people in my generation, I am anti-authoritarian and a little individualistic. I want to find God in my own way, in my own time and, essentially, by my own self…Yep I’m  a true modern devotee. I love the mystics and The Matrix, yoga and the White Stripes, meditation and  designer jeans.  In terms of cultural dialects, I am multi-linugual. I speak New Age and Aveda skin care, Eastern philosophy and Elle magazine…I love modern art and dinner parties, lavender chocolate and dirty martinis, dancing, random road trips and hanging out with girlfriends. My spirituality is real, alive and funky and fresh. It’s not separate from my daily life, it’s so integrated and infused that I can no lnger separate the two.

“May today there be peace within. May  you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May  you not forget the infinite possibilities that are  born of faith in yourself and others. May you use the gifts that you  have received, and pass on the love that has been given to  you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are. Let  this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the  freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each  and every one of us.” – Anonymous

According to Brahma Kumaris, Meditation is “the most important journey you can take is the journey within. This is a journey to the truth of who you really are. This is the place, just beyond every day consciousness, where spiritual empowerment begins. Spiritual power gives you the power to choose creative thinking rather than automated thinking, response rather than reaction, peace, love and harmony rather than stress, conflict and chaos.”

I couldn’t agree more, meditation enables you to embark on an inward journey. Meditation gives you a clear spiritual understanding of yourself, helps you re–discover and use the positive qualities already within you, enables you to develop your strengths of character and create new attitudes and responses to life.

I have slowly been introducing  meditation into my life and since then I’ve enjoyed moments of silence and savored periods of introspection and reflection.

I now understand why I’m drawn so much to shopping as it has been my form of non-traditional meditation for over 13 years. It was my time to relax, take refuge and to breath. I’d often reflect on my day, my goals and the direction of my life. It was and still is the time I come up with some of my most brilliant ideas, and clearly define my thoughts. It has resulted in a conscious, positive release of energy which improves the quality of my attitude, actions, and interactions.

Everyone can benefit from a form of meditation because it is taught as a method of raising self-awareness leading to self–realization. Self-actualization leads to action, action leads to results and results lead to further discovery. Take a moment and dive into the act of meditation because when you are uncomfortable is when you grow the most.

What has been your form of meditation?

Early in my career as an addictions nurse an old timer shared his thoughts around material belongings on this earth.  It’s stuck with me over the years…..

No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up!  It’s important in life to try your best in all aspects of life.  Yes, most people will judge you by your appearance to a certain degree.  Conveying your spiritual self to others is just as important as your outward appearance.  A simple smile of compassion goes a long way.  It produces a positive message.  Being happy with yourself has to be the result of a balanced life.  I work at it daily, sometimes with success and other times with none.  A struggle for most I know.

As a child I was presented with organized religion like most my age.  As a young adult I struggled like some of my peers with “where do I fit in?”  The one thing I could relate to was a feeling deep inside of faith.  That “feeling” remains today.  I try to listen to it, to engage it because I FEEL that it’s right and that will be the only thing that will come with me.  No U-Haul necessary.

The Camino de Santiago de Compostela, also known in English as The Way of St James which is a collection of old pilgrimage routes which cover all Europe. They all have Santiago de Compostela in north west Spain as their final destination. For more than 1000 years pilgrims have been walking along the Camino de Santiago.

The main Camino route is the Camino Frances. This part of the Camino de Santiago traditionally starts in St Jean Pied de Port and finishes in Santiago de Compostela about 780km later, after traveling the breadth of Northern Spain.  However you can start anywhere and even continue past Santiago to the sea at Finisterre. Finisterre was thought to be the end of the world in medieval times.

A pilgrimage is a term primarily used in religion and spirituality of a long journey or search of great moral significance. Sometimes, it is a journey to a sacred place or shrine of importance to a person’s beliefs and faith.

I mention on more than one occasion that the better you know yourself the easier it is to make decisions based on your heart and soul verses your mind. The Road to Santiago is a journey of self-discovery, one which I’m taking for my 30th birthday. Have you taken the journey? I would love to hear your story.
