Spiritual

From Java, the King of Indonesia and home to some of the most stunning religious architecture in Asia, to Bali, Island of the Gods. This is one of my top 5 places to visit because it is full of culture and spiritual heritage.

Places to See

Borobudur

Looming out of a patchwork of bottle-green paddies and swaying palm tops, this colossal Buddhist relic is one of southeast Asia’s marvels. It has survived Gunung Merapi’s ash flows, terrorist bombs and the wear and tear of a million pairs of tourist flipflops to remain as enigmatic and beautiful as it must have been 1200 years ago.

Borobudur is built from two million block stones in the form of a massive symmetrical stupa, literally wrapped around a small hill. It stands solidly on its 118m x 118m (387ft x 387ft) base. Six square terraces are topped by three circular ones, with four stairways leading up through finely carved gateways to the top. The paintwork is long gone, but it’s thought that the grey stone of Borobudur was at one time washed with a colour to catch the sun.

Kelimutu

Set in plunging craters at the summit of a volcano, the coloured lakes of Kelimutu are undoubtedly the most spectacular sight in Nusa Tenggara. Astonishingly, the lakes periodically change hue – today one may be iridescent turquoise, its neighbour chocolate brown and a third lake dark green.

A few years ago the colours were blue, maroon and black, while back in the 1960s the lakes were blue, red-brown and café au lait.

It’s thought that the lakes’ colours are in constant flux due to dissolving minerals, a process that can accelerate in the rainy season. The moonscape around the summit gives Kelimutu an ethereal atmosphere, especially when clouds billow across the craters and sun shafts add luminescent pinpoints to the lakes.

Lore Lindu National Park

This large and remote national park has barely been touched by tourism. It’s a wonderful area for trekking, rich in exotic plant and animal life. The butterflies there can be larger than a human hand. It’s also home to several indigenous tribes who wear colourful clothing for their traditional ceremonies.

Attractions in the park include ancient megalithic relics, mostly in the Bada, Besoa and Napu Valleys; remote peaks, some more than 2500m (8200ft); bird-watching around Kamarora; and the large lake of Danau Lindu.

Gunung Kawi

At the bottom of a lush green valley is one of Bali’s oldest, most charming and certainly largest ancient monuments. Gunung Kawi consists of 10 rock-cut candi (shrines), memorials cut out of the rock face in imitation of actual statues. They stand in 7m-high (23ft-high) sheltered niches cut into the sheer cliff face.

One of my biggest passions is travel, I’m eager to visit places that will have an impact on my soul. Have you been anywhere enlightening? Please share your experiences.

I was inspired to write this after reading Jennine’s story “Everyone is Beautiful”. I’m a big believer that humans are sensory creatures, and the way we dress up and show up speaks volumes about how truly beautiful each of us is. Don’t be confused by the word beauty, “beauty comes from within” and if you remove the propaganda of the media from your mind you will recognize just how true that really is. The way we present ourselves defines us to others. It gives someone the opportunity to take a deeper look or to just pass us by.

Beauty (to me) is not reflective of body shape, designer labels, a pristine hair cut or perfectly manicured hands. Beauty is seeing the truth, the authentic and the pure. And if you take the effort to make sure that is evident in your personal appearance you will notice a shift in your reality -  it will open doors, lead you down a path and take you on a journey.

The big question is, do you look like yourself? If I were to pass you on the street would I be able to see who you clearly are through your appearance? Is your appearance aligned with your spirit, is your essence visible, are your philosophies clear? Think about the colours you choose, the accessories you adorn yourself with, the silhouettes and lines you pick, the scent you spray, your body art (tattoos, piercings). Everything you select reflects who you are at your core. And if you choose baggy clothes that lack colour, neglect jewelry or fail to brush your hair (unless that’s intentional) you are sending a message. What do you want your message to be? Soulfully Confident, Sophisticated and Determined? If you take the time and effort to decide where you want to live, how you want raise your children, what steps your going to take to grow your business don’t forget about YOU in the process. Honour Your Style and your True Beauty will shine through.

My friend Sabeen Haque just posted a powerful message on her facebook status that I wanted to share.

Silence & SoundI live my life between two truths, silence and sound. Silence is where i find the divine. Sound is how i express the divinity in me.

Word Cloud

[Manifestation] We hear it more and more these days as individuals realize the power of thought. The act of manifestation has a direct effect on our ability to acquire our inner most dreams. From the dawn of day, the power of thought has been the secret.

Self Realization + Thought = Our Desired Future

Thoughts become things. Gandhi imagined non-violent change. Albert Einstein imagined riding a beam of light and discovered relativity. Martin Luther King imagined a world where people are judged solely by the content of their character. Nelson Mandela imagined a South Africa free of apartheid. It was through each of their thoughts that created some of the most powerful changes in human history.

Still skeptical about the power of manifestation? I don’t blame you. “Believe nothing, no matter where you read it or who has said it not even if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.” – Buddha. Do your own experiment. First – research, read up on our leaders, and find out more about the law of attraction, power of thought, visualization, manifestation and then – take action.

What are your thoughts? We live in a society which operates in autopilot (at times myself included) and it is crucial for us to wake up from this state and start living consciously. We get into a routine of doing and not so much thinking or reflecting. Why are we doing the things we do? Our minds are muffled by the white noise and therefore we neglect to listen. We’ve been brainwashed and manipulated into the need to follow, to purchase, and to collect. It is that materialism that has caused spiritual lethargy in human beings because we are relating much more to our physical surroundings than to our soul’s needs. We are not spending enough time reflecting and looking inwards. “Be the change you want to see in the world” Gandhi so wisely said. And that means starting with ourselves.

  • Meditation can help with clarity.
  • Walking benefits your brain power, improves your mood and allows you to connect more deeply with your thoughts.
  • Journaling, Robin Sharma says “Writing in a journal will make you a much cleaner thinker, leading you to much clearer actions. Record what you are learning about yourself and life. List your goals, hopes and dreams. Note your feelings and frustrations. Self-awareness is the foundation of world-class leadership”
  • Mind Map, A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing. Create your own.
  • Accountability Partner, similar to a business mentor, coach or a goal-setting buddy is a trusted and respected individual that will act as a goal-setting moderator. The idea is to hold regular meetings with your Accountability Partner who will challenge, motivate, mentor, encourage and inspire you to achieve maximum results.

Creating your own personal manifesto is critical to obtaining what you really want. Gwen Bell wrote a great guide “How to Create your Personal Manifesto”. Start there and let your soul be your guide.

Do you have a Vision Board/Map, Inspiration Board, or Dream Board? Essentially the exercise of creating one will help to manifest what you truly want. Check out Jamie Ridler Studios and participate in her online full moon dream board sessions.

This is my vision board:

[Light] something that makes things visible or affords illumination. In a world such as ours we are constantly looking for the light whether it is the light of a great idea, the positive light in a negative situation or the light within. Each of us possesses such a joie de vivre one that is natural, innate, and authentic. Do you know what your light is? Marianne Williamson once said “Our biggest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our biggest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that scares us the most…”

What does your light look like?

The look & feel of your light is essentially your Style. Not just the way you present your outward appearance but the way you express your culture, your identity, your passions and your spirit. It is personal and should be an authentic representation of who you are at the very core.

My light [or Style Statement] is Elegant Discovery. For me it is about how it all comes together and identifying the potential that exists deep within.

Elegance can sometimes be mistaken for the stuck up and snooty – you know the ladies I’m talking about. They often look very well put together, not a hair out of place; they have their noses in the air, hardly notice your presence and are carrying a toy pup in their Chanel tote. I like to think that my form of Elegance has broken those stereotypes and is seen as a unique style, a warm smile and a clear vision of hope.

Find out what is at your very core, listen to your soul and build an appearance that guides your inner essence…let your outer appearance shine as brightly as your inner light.

In today’s society we are conditioned that more is better. That we need a lot of stuff. Think back 15 years ago – life was a bit different. We only had one family car, one television in the house, a couple of favourite things be it jewelry, toys or electronic devices. We spent more time enjoying the beautiful outdoors, we shared the television spending time together as a family and quality meant more than quantity.

By subtracting we can add so much more value. Pairing down to one email address vs. three we spend less time on the computer  and more time with our loved ones. Getting rid of one car in the driveway reduces the carbon footprint we are leaving on the environment and reducing the amount of stuff we own helps the planet become more sustainable. I too was a little skeptical that little things such as this would make much of a difference, checkout  The Story of Stuff, a 20 minute video that will completely change your outlook of our impact on this planet.

You may be asking do we really gain through loss? Can we actually add value by subtracting? Best-selling business author Jim Collins starts each year by choosing what not to do and each of his to-do lists always includes “stop doing” items. Collins advocates that developing a strong discipline around first giving careful thought to prioritizing goals and objectives, then eliminating the bottom 20% of the list…forever.

Jim Collins made the “stop doing” argument in an eloquent essay, which appeared in USA Today:

“A great piece of art is composed not just of what is the final piece, but equally what is not. It is the discipline to discard what does not fit – to cut out what might have already cost days or even years of effort – that distinguishes the truly exceptional artist and marks the ideal piece of work, be it a symphony, a novel, a painting, a company, or most important of all, a life.”

I’m learning that simplicity is a huge part of elegance and in my pursuit of just that I’m making more of an attempt to pair down and make things easier in my life, to be more productive and more importantlyto make room for what’s truly important. What has been a great deal of help is Leo Babauta’s website Zen Habits and The Simple Living Manifesto: 72 Ideas to Simplify Your Life.

This idea of simplicity is also true of Style & Fashion. Less is far more powerful. De-cluttering your wardrobe to only the clothing you absolutely love and feel amazing in or removing one element from an outfit that changes it from great to stunning. This form of subtraction allows you to project confidence, adds an element of interest and intrigue and most importantly we see you before we see your clothes.

What are you going to subtract from your wardrobe or life this week?

My personal mission…is the pursuit of elegance. In my Style, in my work, in my surroundings and in my life. To live & breath it – consciously, spiritually.

Elegant defined in my Style Statement is: A class act: poised, gracious, respectful. Presentation matters to them. Elegant very much cares how it all comes together-outfits, business plans, and celebrations. The truly Elegant are masters of restraint and humbly respectful. They are never over the top and certainly never skimp. Elegant knows when to look away or to be silent, and seek to lend dignity and honour to all situations. They are direct without being forceful. Elegant prizes solutions and are driven to find the optimal way of achieving a goal, usually through a method ineffably simple and percise. They create power with simplicity. They delight in being exact, and they always seem to get thing just right. When they feel stressed or derided, they can withdraw abruptly or turn sharp and critical in defense. Elegant pays attention to the details, ever so tenderly, and zealously avoids what is crass or lacking in integrity.

Elegance defined in the book “In The Pursuit of Elegance” by Matthew E. May is characterized by four key elements – seduction, subtraction, symmetry, and sustainability.

Elegance defined in Merriam-Webster dictionary is: a : refined grace or dignified propriety b : tasteful richness of design or ornamentation c : dignified gracefulness or restrained beauty of style d : scientific precision, neatness, and simplicity.

To me, this is what Elegance is:

Elegance

“Fashion anticipates, elegance is a state of mind.” – Oleg Cassini. What do you believe to be elegant? What is your definition?
